Personalized feed approach

I am trying to create a custom feed for each user. I am interested in offering events based on the projects that each user follows. I've already created the event model, but I'm not sure where to start the "personalized" part :(

I've been looking at the "simple-feed" gem, but it's been standing still for a few months now and I don't want to depend on it.

any approach would be welcome :)
